Extreme expanses of solid mass juxtaposed against water and void create a forceful sense of scale and distance. This vast cavernous space emphasises the distance between those who wield power and those without, whilst also hinting at the necessary depth of those individuals who possess it.

The "island" entrance to Miuccia Prada's domain characterises her independent and isolated approach to design, whilst also creating an ambiguous relationship with the heavy, formal lines of its composition.

The individual behind the power. The warmth behind the walls. These notions are experimented with throughout the scheme.

Mash Up

Whether it is intentional or not, through our admiration we are being subjected to an offensive and are scrambling to find a defence. Fear and power do not peacefully coexist. It follows, then, that she who wishes to reach the most rarefied and potent ranks must form and set the various trends, and possess a flat-out disregard for what you think. Power presses on at his pace and with his priorities, what sets her apart is her disregard—in some cases, her open contempt—for the dictates of fashion. He faces no imminent desperation, and while the public often place great value in luxury and mainstream culture, the to and fro from the various factions mean little to him.

"If home is where I work, and I work everywhere, do I not live under the sea also? We must remember that the only missions to succeed are the impossible ones..." - Electroliquid Aggregation

The shear voids that many of the spaces front onto are in immitation of the dangers faced by both men daily in their experiments.

The extreme height and verticality of the ramp reinforces the theoretical and physical distance between the scientists' respective fields of study, whilst simultaneously uniting them in one co-dependent structure.

As Nobel works "everywhere", even the dimensionally awkward spaces of his labratory have been utilised in this design.

Jacques Cousteau
"The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed."

For Cousteau's drawings, i've placed an emphasis on awkward geometry and vertically orientated structure. Together these qualities embody many of the difficulties involved in sub-surface exploration and life, allowing the lab-space to mirror the field.

Alfred Nobel
"Home is where I work, and I work everywhere."

The more primitive geometry of Nobel's drawings encourages an industrial setting within, and enables the diversity of space necessary to conduct explosives testing alongside theoretical work. The division of these two activities was a primary consideration.

Jacques Cousteau
"Can people live under the sea? If they can, for how long? A day, a week, a month? Captain Cousteau took these questions as a new challenge and launched his team into a mad adventure: building houses under the sea."

Keith Campbell:

"Cloning may be good and it may be bad. Probably it's a bit of both. The question must not be greeted with reflex hysteria but decided quietly, soberly and on it's own merits. We need less emotion and more thought"

Rosalie Gascoigne
She uses wood, iron, wire, feathers, and yellow and orange retro-reflective road signs, which flash and glow in the light. Some of her other works use faded drinks crates; thinly-sliced yellow Schweppes boxes; ragged domestic items such as torn floral lino and patchy enamelware; vernacular building materials such as galvanised tin, corrugated iron and masonite; and fibrous, rosy cable reel ends. (Wikipedia)

Gascoigne's practice involves the sculpting of old, weathered and "unwanted" objects into highly structured yet often subtle patterns. She mounts these textured arrangments on backings of plywood or sheet metal.

Tracey Moffatt
Moffatt uses a variety of different means to bring her art to her audience, including photography, prints, silkscreens, and ink applied to a range of mediums. Some of her works, such as "Self Portrait" are handpainted photographs. Beyond this, she embelishes her subject matter through costume, make-up and setting to convey the narrative-style nature of her works.

A strong feminist and racially confronting artist, Moffatt employs satire and wit to challenge her audience's cultural standing, as in "Something More". The artist herself is often placed within her works.
